What it is
Every vehicle in Nepal must carry third-party insurance. It pays people your vehicle hurts or kills and property it damages. It doesn't pay for your own vehicle. For that you need a comprehensive policy.
The 2083/84 budget doubled the third-party limit to Rs 10 lakh. We couldn't find new motor insurance rules from the Nepal Insurance Authority by October 2026, so check your policy schedule for the limit that applies to you.
Claim deadlines insurers must follow
| Stage | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Surveyor's report after appointment | 15 days |
| Payment after the surveyor's report | 21 days |
| Small claims up to Rs 2 lakh | 15 days after the minimum documents |
Who needs it
- Vehicle owners and drivers involved in a road accident.
- People hurt by a vehicle, or families of someone killed, claiming from the vehicle's third-party insurance.
What you need
- In practice
Your insurance policy number and the vehicle's bluebook
- Official
Driving licence of the person who was driving
Insurers can refuse a claim if the driver had no licence or was drunk.
- In practice
Police report of the accident
Ask the insurer which papers it needs. It has to ask for all of them at once, in writing.
- In practice
Photos of the vehicles, the place and any injuries
In practice items aren't in the official rules but are commonly asked for at the counter.
How it works
- 1
Call the police
Call 100 for the police or 103 for the traffic police control room. Get the injured to hospital first, and ask the police for the report number.
- 2
Tell your insurer straight away
The Nepal Insurance Authority's claims guideline says to inform the insurer as soon as possible in writing. If you can only phone or email first, that counts as the claim date, but follow it up in writing quickly.
- 3
Meet the surveyor
The insurer appoints a licensed surveyor right away and tells you their name and contact. The surveyor has 15 days to send a report on what the insurer owes. Give them the documents they ask for in writing.
- 4
Get paid
The insurer should pay a non-life claim within 21 days of the surveyor's report. Claims up to Rs 2 lakh count as small claims and are meant to be settled within 15 days of the minimum documents. If the insurer refuses or is late, it has to tell you why in writing.
- 5
Complain if you're stuck
You can complain to the Nepal Insurance Authority if the insurer doesn't pay on time or you disagree with its decision.

Common problems
Is third-party insurance compulsory?
Yes. Every vehicle must have third-party insurance, and you need it to renew the bluebook. It pays other people for death, injury or damage your vehicle causes. Damage to your own vehicle needs a comprehensive policy.
The other driver says their insurance will pay.
Ask for their policy number and insurer, and get the police report. Their third-party insurance pays you, so the claim goes to their insurer.
The vehicle that hit me drove off.
Report it to the police straight away. A Road Safety Bill registered in Parliament in October 2026 would pay victims of unidentified vehicles from a national fund, but it isn't law yet.
Can the insurer refuse my claim?
Insurers can refuse if the driver had no valid licence or was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They can also refuse if the accident happened outside the area the policy covers. They have to give the reason in writing.
The insurer keeps asking for more papers.
The guideline says insurers must list their claim documents publicly and ask for everything at once, in writing. Ask for the full list.
