What it is

Vehicle tax (सवारी साधन कर) is a provincial tax paid every fiscal year. Each province sets its own rates in its yearly Economic Act, so a bike in Gandaki doesn't pay the same as one in Bagmati. This page uses Bagmati's 2083/84 rates for private vehicles as a worked example.

The biggest change in 2083/84 is the bluebook. In Bagmati and Koshi, once your online payment shows in the vehicle registration system, you don't need to take the bluebook to the transport office for a renewal stamp. Hired (commercial) vehicles pay lower tax rates than private ones, and fire engines, ambulances and hearses pay none.

Who needs it

  • Every owner of a registered vehicle. The tax is due every fiscal year, which ends in mid-July (end of Ashadh).

How it works

  1. 1

    Find your rate

Tax depends on the vehicle type and engine size (or motor power for electric vehicles). The table below has Bagmati's 2083/84 rates.

  2. 2

    Pay online

Provinces now take vehicle tax through their online systems. Bagmati also lets you pay through the Nagarik App. Keep the payment receipt.

  3. 3

Check it shows in the registration system

In Bagmati and Koshi, a payment made through the linked online systems that shows in the vehicle registration system (VRS) counts as renewal. You no longer need the bluebook stamped at the office.

  4. 4

Pay at the office if online doesn't work

Go to the Transport Management Office where the vehicle is registered with the bluebook. The office stamps the bluebook when you pay in person.

Common problems

I paid online. Do I still need the bluebook stamped?

Not in Bagmati or Koshi, as long as the payment shows in the vehicle registration system. Carry the online receipt or a screenshot in case police ask.

My vehicle is more than 15 years old.

Bagmati adds 5% to the tax for each year beyond fourteen, but the extra never goes above the normal tax amount. So the most an old vehicle pays is double.

My bike was scrapped or no longer exists, but tax keeps adding up.

In Bagmati, if you pay the current year's tax and renewal fee by the end of Poush 2083, the fines up to 2082/83 are waived and the bike is removed from the records. You need a recommendation from your local level and police confirming it no longer exists.

My vehicle was stolen.

Bagmati waives tax, renewal fees and fines for the period it was missing if you bring a police letter and proof the vehicle was blocked (रोक्का) at the transport office.

I'm late. How much is the fine?

Fines are set by provincial law and grow the longer you wait. Provinces regularly announce waivers, often around the start of the fiscal year, so check the current notice before paying.
