HIV testing and counselling are free at government testing centres in every district, and HIV treatment (ART) is free for everyone who needs it. In Kathmandu, Shukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital in Teku has HIV and STI services. If you think you were exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours, go to a hospital emergency department straight away and ask about PEP, medicine that can stop infection. WHO advises starting it as early as possible, ideally within 24 hours and no later than 72 hours. Results are kept confidential.

How soon after sex can I test?
Some infections take weeks to show on tests. Ask the counsellor which tests to take now and when to repeat them.
Where do I get treatment if I test positive?
HIV treatment is free at government ART sites across the country. The National Centre for AIDS and STD Control publishes a map of them.
Can I go to a private clinic instead?
Yes, private clinics test and treat STIs for a fee. Government services are free.
