What it is

Renewal is the cheapest it will ever be in the first 90 days after your licence expires. After that the law adds a fine equal to the full renewal fee for each year you're late, up to five times the fee. At five years the licence is cancelled.

The fees and the late fine schedule on this page come from Bagmati Province for the 2083/84 fiscal year. Other provinces publish their own rates in their yearly Economic Acts, so check with your Transport Management Office if you're elsewhere.

Who needs it

  • Anyone whose licence has expired or is about to expire.
  • People holding licences issued before Shrawan 2082, which were valid for five years.

How it works

  1. 1

    Check the expiry date

You have 90 days after the date on your licence to renew without a fine. After that the fine starts at the full renewal fee and grows every year.

  2. 2

    Apply and pay online

Use your province's EDLVRS portal, for example edlvrs.bagamati.gov.np. Since 1 Shrawan 2083 renewals and payments are made there.

  3. 3

Go to the Transport Management Office

Take your original licence and citizenship. Transport offices such as Bhaktapur's say the applicant has to come in person.

  4. 4

    Collect the renewed card

Renewed licences are valid for ten years. Watch the printed licence lists on dotm.gov.np for your office.

Common problems

My licence expired more than five years ago.

It's cancelled automatically. You have to apply for a new licence from the start, including the written exam and trial.

I have both a bike and a car licence. Do I pay twice?

No. Bagmati's Economic Act says you pay the renewal fee for the most expensive category and the others are renewed with it. For a bike and car licence that's Rs 4,000.

I'm abroad and my licence is expiring.

The renewal still needs an in-person visit to the transport office. Renew within 90 days of getting back if you can. Each year past that adds another 100% of the fee in fines.

My old licence was valid for five years. Is it now ten?

Not automatically. The ten-year validity applies to licences issued or renewed after the 2082 amendment, so your current card keeps its printed expiry date until you renew.
