What it is
The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection takes complaints about goods and services under the Consumer Protection Act 2075, such as faulty or fake products, expired goods, overcharging and services that weren't delivered. You can file one online, free, with photos and your bill.
For problems with food, also tell the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control, whose inspectors seize unsafe food and take sellers to court.

For mouldy, expired or adulterated food, also tell the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control or its nearest office. Keep the product and packaging.

Go further if needed
For compensation, the Consumer Protection Act 2075 lets you take a case to the Consumer Court in Kathmandu. A lawyer can advise on time limits.

Common problems
A supermarket gave me sweets instead of change.
You're entitled to your correct change. Ask for it, and if it keeps happening, report the store with the bill.
I was overcharged above the printed price.
Selling above the maximum retail price is an unfair trade practice. Keep the bill and file a complaint.
Does this cover online shops?
Yes, for registered sellers who sold you faulty or overpriced goods. If you paid and got nothing, it's fraud, so report it to the police. See the page on online shopping scams.
Does it cover services like room finders or consultancies?
Paid services count too. The department has fined education consultancies under the Consumer Protection Act.
