Short answer
Use a bank transfer or a remittance company licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank, either through its app, a partner money transfer operator abroad or a bank in the country you work in. The family can receive it in a bank or wallet account or collect cash at an agent with ID and the reference number. Don't use hundi, the informal network that skips the banking system: it's illegal, you have no protection if the money disappears and it leaves no record of your earnings.
The details
Legal ways to send money
| Route | How the family receives it |
|---|---|
| Bank to bank transfer | Straight into a Nepali bank account |
| Licensed remittance company app | Bank account, wallet or cash pickup |
| Money transfer operator abroad, paid out by a Nepali partner | Cash pickup with ID and reference number, or account deposit |
Before you send
- Check the company is licensed in Nepal. Nepal Rastra Bank licenses remittance companies through its Foreign Exchange Management Department.
- Keep every receipt and reference number.
- Use the family member's name exactly as it appears on their citizenship, or the payout can be refused.
Common problems
Hundi gives a better rate. Why not use it?
It's illegal under Nepal's foreign exchange law and gives you nothing if the agent disappears. Money sent through banks and licensed companies also builds a record of your income, which helps with bank loans, tax and proving where your money came from later.
How do I compare companies?
Compare the amount that actually arrives in rupees for the same send amount, not the advertised fee alone. The exchange rate each company uses matters as much as the fee.
The family didn't receive the money.
Contact the company with the reference number and receipt. If it isn't resolved, complain to Nepal Rastra Bank's Foreign Exchange Management Department, which licenses remittance companies.
Should it go to a bank account or be collected as cash?
A bank account is safer and leaves a record. It also means the family doesn't have to carry cash.
