What it is

Every worker who takes a labour permit pays into the Foreign Employment Welfare Fund, run by the Foreign Employment Board. In return the Board provides financial support if the worker dies, is injured or falls seriously ill during foreign employment, helps bring stranded workers home and transports bodies back to Nepal free of charge.

Support for a death was raised to Rs 10 lakh per family by the Sixth Amendment to the Foreign Employment Rules in 2081. The Board's charter covers deaths during the work period and, since a 2074 amendment, within one year after it ends. The claim has to be made within a year of the body reaching Nepal.

Who needs it

  • Families of Nepali workers who went abroad with a labour permit and died during their work period, or within a year after it ended.

How it works

  1. 1

    Bring the body home free

The Foreign Employment Board arranges free transport of the body for workers who went with a labour permit. Contact the Board or the Nepali embassy in that country.

  2. 2

    Collect the documents

Register the death at the ward and get a relationship certificate listing the heirs. Keep copies of the labour permit and any documents from the employer or embassy.

  3. 3

    Apply within one year

Submit the claim within one year of the body arriving in Nepal. Since the Fifth Amendment to the Foreign Employment Rules, families can apply through their local level instead of travelling to Kathmandu.

  4. 4

    Track the payment

Call 9851361448 for the status of death, injury and family treatment payments.

Common problems

The worker went on a visit visa, without a labour permit.

Board support is for workers who went with a labour permit. That's one of the main reasons not to go abroad for work without one.

The death happened after the contract ended.

The Board's charter covers deaths within one year after the work period ends. Take the contract dates and labour permit to the Board and ask before assuming you can't claim.

Are the worker's children eligible for anything?

The Board runs scholarships for children of workers who died or were seriously injured in foreign employment. Ask when you apply.

Who do I call with a complaint?

The Board's toll-free number is 1141. Its labour call centre is also on 16600150005, and Viber and IMO on 9851347222.
