Short answer
Not on most popular routes, if you're a foreign trekker. Under the revised TIMS rules in force since 31 March 2023, trekkers on the routes the Nepal Tourism Board lists must be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide and carry a TIMS card issued by a government-registered trekking agency. The list includes Everest Base Camp, Gokyo, Annapurna Circuit, Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal, Langtang, Manaslu, Upper Mustang and more. Book through a registered agency, which arranges both.

What a registered agency arranges
- Licensed trekking guide for the whole route.
- TIMS card for each trekker, issued online with a QR code.
- Restricted-area permits, if your route needs them.

Which routes need a guide?
The Nepal Tourism Board's list covers routes in the Kanchenjunga, Makalu-Barun, Everest, Rolwaling, Helambu, Langtang, Manaslu, Annapurna, Mustang, Dhaulagiri, Dolpo and Humla regions. Check the full list on its TIMS page.
Can I hire a guide I meet in Pokhara or Thamel?
The guide must be licensed and the TIMS card must come from a government-registered agency. Go through an agency so both are in order.
Does this apply to Nepali trekkers?
TIMS fees are set for SAARC and other foreign trekkers, and Nepalis pay their own park entry fee. If you're Nepali and unsure about a route, ask the park or conservation area office.
How much should I tip?
There's no official rate. Agree on pay and what's included with the agency before you set off.
