What it is

Two free public searches tell you whether a business legally exists. The Office of the Company Registrar lets you look a company up by its registration number, and the Inland Revenue Department lets you check a PAN.

Existing on paper isn't the same as being trustworthy, so also check the licence that its trade needs, from the regulator that issues it.

Who needs it

  • Anyone about to pay, sign with or work for a business they don't know.

What you need

  • The company's registration number or PAN

Ask for them. A genuine business will share both.

    In practice

In practice items aren't in the official rules but are commonly asked for at the counter.

How it works

  1. 1

    Search the company register

The Office of the Company Registrar has a public company search by registration number. Check the name and registration details match what they told you.

  2. 2

    Check the PAN

Use the Inland Revenue Department's PAN search to confirm the PAN belongs to that business name.

  3. 3

Check the licence for its trade

Many businesses need a second licence. Manpower agencies are licensed by the Department of Foreign Employment, study consultancies by the Ministry of Education, banks and finance companies by Nepal Rastra Bank, brokers by SEBON and online shops register with the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection.

  4. 4

Ask for a VAT or PAN bill

Registered businesses must issue a bill. Refusing to give one is a warning sign.

Common problems

The company is registered. Does that mean it's safe?

Not by itself. Registration shows it exists, not that it's honest. Check the licence for its trade, reviews and whether it gives proper bills and contracts.

They only gave me a Facebook page.

Ask for the registration number, PAN and office address. If they won't share them, don't pay in advance.

It's a manpower agency.

Use the Department of Foreign Employment's licence search instead. See how to check a manpower agency.
