Can I use PayPal in Nepal?
PayPal still can't pay out to Nepali bank accounts. How Nepali freelancers get paid instead, and what Nepal Rastra Bank's 2026 rules change.

Not for receiving money. PayPal doesn't let you withdraw to a Nepali bank account, and there's no official PayPal service in Nepal yet, although Nepal Rastra Bank has said it has been talking to PayPal. Most freelancers get paid through Payoneer, a platform's own bank transfer or a SWIFT transfer straight into a Nepali bank account. Since October 2026 they can also keep up to USD 10,000 of their foreign earnings on a prepaid dollar card for spending abroad.

Paying for software, hosting or subscriptions is a different question. See How do I pay for Netflix or ChatGPT from Nepal?. From 19 Ashoj 2083, people earning foreign currency from service exports can keep up to USD 10,000 of it on a prepaid card and spend up to USD 10,000 a year.
Why PayPal doesn't work here
Nepal Rastra Bank controls how foreign currency moves in and out of the country, and PayPal hasn't launched a service that pays out to Nepali banks. Payment rules have changed several times since 2021, so check the date on any advice you read.

Yes. Freelance income is business or professional income, so get a PAN and file an income tax return each year. Bring money in through banks so you have a record of it.
Which is cheapest, Payoneer or a bank transfer?
It depends on the platform and amount. SWIFT transfers carry fixed fees from both banks, which hurts small payments. Payoneer charges conversion and withdrawal fees. Compare what actually lands in your account for a typical payment.
Is PayPal launching soon?
Nepal Rastra Bank has said publicly that it has contacted PayPal, with Fonepay and a commercial bank named as possible partners, but PayPal hasn't announced a launch. Treat any website promising PayPal withdrawals to Nepal with caution.
